Wyndholme Village Breaking News

April 12, 2000

I thought I got out of the wrong side of my bed when I woke up early Sunday morning and saw a blanket of snow all over my deck and backyard.  That was a quick change from the nice, warm weather on Saturday.  Thankfully since then, it looks as if Spring has sprung back!

We had a terrific turnout last Friday at our Deaf Culture Presentation by Dr. Barbara Kannapell.   Dr. Kannapell told of her experiences growing up with her deaf family and attending deaf schools.  Many seniors present identified with what Dr. Kannapell shared.  "Beyond Silence" a film about deaf parents and their family was shown afterwards.

We are expecting about 60 people to attend the Spring Celebration Potluck this coming Friday.  Our bright and shiny Wyndholme Village bus will transport a group of 14 Virginians to this event.

Deaf and hard-of-hearing seniors keep coming to our weekly activities.  This convinces us that they never get tired of seeing old friends and are always happy to make new ones.  Many of them are living in nice homes and nice neighborhoods, but it is not enough.  Isolation is not a healthy experience for seniors and no matter how healthy or affluent people are - companionship is an important part of people's lives.  This is what a community such as Wyndholme abundantly provides.

I recently attended the Prince Georges' Second Annual Provider Conference on Services for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Individuals in Largo, Maryland.  There were about 16 exhibitors and each gave a review of the services they provide.  Many were very curious about Wyndholme Village's current status and were glad to know that we are still "alive and kicking".

I am sure you all read this week Deaf Digest's short article on Wyndholme Village.  What it means is that we are still in bankruptcy proceedings but we expect it to be resolved very soon with a positive outcome.

Wyndholme Village continues to thrive due to the support from the deaf community and our wonderful future residents.  Patience and support from you all is greatly appreciated.  We are looking toward the bright light coming in our direction very soon!  Keep reviewing our website as we are constantly updating information.  Thanks!
