April 17, 2000

Odyssey Cruise, Deaf History & Spring Potluck Celebration

On Friday, May 5th the future residents of WV are planning to cruise the Potomac River in Washington, DC (not far from Wyndholme Village) aboard the glass-covered sightseeing ship, Odyssey.  The two-hour lunch cruise features fabulous menu items such as:  Stuffed Seafood Strudel, Caribbean Island Salad, and Linguini di Mare, and many other selections.

According to the brochure, "the Odyssey was designed to travel beneath the historic bridges spanning the Potomac River."  This scenic tour features spectacular views of the nation's greatest monuments.

The group will board the ship at 10:45 a.m. from the Gangplank Marina in southwest Washington, D.C.  The ship will disembark at 11:30 a.m. and return to port at 1:30 p.m.

Some seniors plan to meet at the Wyndholme Information Center at 9:45 a.m. and ride the shuttle to the marina.  Others plan to drive on their own.  There are currently ten remaining seats aboard the WV shuttle. Those interested are encouraged to call today to reserve their place.

The cost for the cruise luncheon is $37.12 per person, attire is dressy casual. Please send in a check or money order payable to Wyndholme Village, LLC.  This cruise is only for future residents of Wyndholme.

There is a website for deaf history on the Internet.  Two examples of the milestones it contains follow:

Rudolphus Agricola, 1443-1485, was interested in the deaf and wrote a book "De Inventione Dialectica." He wrote that a person who is born deaf could express himself by putting down his thoughts in writing. The book was not published until 100 years later.

Girolamo Cardano, 1501-1576, was a Italian physician concerned about his deaf child. Cardano came across Agricola's book. He agreed that the "sense of hearing and the use of spoken words were not indispensable to understanding ideas." Cardano also believed that the deaf need to learn to read and write. "True, it is difficult but possible." "We can, in reality, manifest our thoughts either with words or with gestures." Cardano invented a code for teaching but did not pursue it; instead, he turned his attention to other areas of medicine.

On Friday, April 14, approximately 60 seniors gathered at the Wyndholme Village Pavilion for a Spring Potluck Celebration from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The weather was a nice, with a perfect temperature of 68 degrees!  Wyndholme staff member, John Ennis along with sales manager Jennifer Willigan, picked up a group of 12 seniors in Virginia to ride the Wyndholme Village bus to the event.  Eve Christian coordinated this effort along with Jennifer.  The group really enjoyed visiting Baltimore and Wyndholme!

Everyone feasted on a variety of homemade dishes from honey-baked ham, sweet potato casserole, chicken divan, cucumber sandwiches, cherry cobbler, cakes, and so much more!  Many seniors prepared their specialty dish to share among their friends.

After the seniors enjoyed their food, a special guest speaker was introduced.  Mr. Joe Huff, presented for thirty minutes about Deaf Relo, his own business that specializes in relocation services for deaf and
hard-of-hearing people.

Many seniors were very interested in Deaf Relo and asked several questions.  One gentleman asked, "Can you help me find a moving company?"  Mr. Huff responded that because he has access to a relocation network system, he can help with anything from selling, buying, moving and a variety of other services.

Afterwards the seniors enjoyed socializing and the Spring Celebration cake that Wyndholme provided for this special event.  Barbara Willigan shared the news that the Wyndholme community will host a potluck supper every month, due to the popularity and success of the event.

Next month the potluck will be held on Friday, May 12 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.  For more details or to RSVP, call 1-800-242-9963 or email us at wyndholme@aol.com.  Also, visit the Wyndholme Village website often to learn of  other upcoming activities.
